To the Hawaiian people, the Honu is more than just a marine animal; it is an Aumakua, a protective ancestral spirit and a symbol of longevity, safety, and good luck. With a shell that mirrors the dappled sunlight filtering through the Pacific waves, a mature Honu can weigh upwards of 300 pounds, yet it moves through the coral gardens with the weightless elegance of a bird in flight, feeding on seagrass and algae that give its fat the emerald tint for which it is named. |
