Noctua (Latin: owl) was a short lived constellation in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is no longer considered a proper constellation because it never had sufficient history. However the stars still remain there and the history behind the name Noctua reaches far back.

More properly, Athene Noctua, got its name in Greek mythology by association with Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The speculation is that it is this bond that has lead to the owl being symbolic of knowledge, wisdom, and insightfulness.
